Don't Feel Guilty About Brewing Your Own.

When talking about the oldest profession in the world, some people immediately begin to think of something vulgar. However, while we don't care to comment on how long "that" profession has been around, we do know there is another profession or interest that has been practiced as long as humankind itself, and the skills for this particular profession have been passed down from generation to generation.

And that profession is brewing. Whether it's beer or wine, the desire and thirst (no pun intended) for alcohol has been around as recorded time.

Beer jugs found in ruins in Egypt date as early as 10,000 B.C., and pictographs depict wine drinking as early as 4,000 B.C. Much of their everyday life involved drinking wine or beer, and their god Osiris was credited with actually inventing beer!

As you may know from what's been found in ancient tombs, the Egyptians sent their loved ones to the afterlife with many items they thought would bring them comfort and be used, and this included beer and wine. So even after they were dead, the Egyptians still enjoyed a good belt every now and again!

In many parts of Asia, there was wine drinking as part of everyday life, although their wines were typically made of a rice base rather than grapes and other fruits used today. Some historians claim records of Asian drinking habits dating as far back as 400 B.C.

Ancient Babylon was known for its zest and love of life, and this includes their love of alcohol. Even writings in the Bible depict the Babylonians as being those who loved drinking along with feasts and large banquets. Wine was a part of everyday meals and even used for its medicinal purposes.

Virtually every culture in the world has a history or legacy of beer or wine, and many viewed it as just another dietary staple, along with bread and meat.

So if you're someone interested in home brewing, rest assured that you are not alone. This is nothing "bad" or anything to be ashamed of. Some of your friends may not understand your pursuit and may wonder if you're trying to hide something from the government by brewing your own beer in the basement, but you and I both know this just isn't the case. Brewing beer and wine has been long enjoyed by people everywhere, and can truly be called, if not "the" oldest profession in the world, certainly one of the oldest!
