"Magic Basics" How to Do Magic

Before you jump into doing magic tricks, there are
some basic instructions and points to keep in mind:

1) Think safety first. Some intermediate and advanced
magic tricks have elements of danger in them. So use
caution and seek help and advice from an experienced
magician for help. Also, use caution with what is
called street magic, especially if you are under 18
(seek permission from your parents or guardian first).

2) New costumes, new tricks, new anything...doesn't
always mean better. Focus on details and the old
stuff can work just fine.

3) Don't do trying to imitate tricks you've heard
about or seen on television or at the movies like
tying yourself up and immersing yourself under water,
lighting yourself with fire or any other such unsafe
practices. Leave this stuff to pros who thoroughly
research and test each aspect of the trick before
taking the plunge into such serious waters.

4) You'll need to develop stage presence and a poker
face as you grow your magic business. So start being
more alert to how others are in their performances
for tips that can help you.

5) Take time to study the craft. And get a mentor or
coach as needed.

6) Start with a simple routine and grow your act. Come
up with an opening, middle and closing and find smaller
parts to insert to vary your act for different audiences -
maybe use different props, different costumes, different
helpers, etc.

7) Practice, practice, practice. Even if you fail at
something, pick yourself off and keep going. During a
performance, keep pacing yourself and move to the end.
People often overlook one messed up trick when they have
many more eat ones to focus on throughout the entire
presentation.

As you can tell, there are many things to take into
account with magic tricks...

So stay tuned for your next lesson where you'll learn
more about how it's all in the act...
